he was being entirely sarastic and was poking fun at the histrionics and artsy fartsy-ness that actors bring into sets/stage. You missed the point entirely my friend... what he is saying here is not his method (though it might be, I'm not Sir Ian) but a satire on "methods" of acting in general. Acting from within is a wholly American concept, read up on the Europeans (Meyerhold; Biomechanics, Grotowski) and broaden your horizons a little bit. Truth comes from more aspects than within.

Identify a time when you are grumpy, pessimistic and cold. For me, that's when my mom's annoying boyfriend and his bratty kids come over. I go from open, warm Jesse to cold, mean, standoffish, grumpy Jesse. I can transfer that behavior to the character. That way, I am NOT illustrating my foggy idea of being a cranky old crotch, I am truly connecting with it. I love McKellen, but I've learned that finding the character within yourself leads to much more truthful acting.

For me -- as well as many other actors -- It's difficult to truly connect with the character by pretending to be him. It leaves too many unanswered questions, and not even the most accomplished of actors can "become" a completely different person. Work from the inside-out: Find the character in you. If you're asked to play Scrooge, instead of imagining what it would like to be a grumpy old humbug [continued]

@AtLastOnTheGround What exactly do you mean ? I don't see how his method is any different from yours. Don't get me wrong, I see where you are coming from, however, i do think that this method which he uses works better for some people.

Acting by playing "make believe" and "pretending" that you are the character leads to false theatrics and illustration. You need to find the character within yourself -- We are all a prism of characters, we change our self-perception based on how we feel about our appearance, who we are with, where we are, what the circumstances are, and our expectations. I do love McKellen, but I disagree with his method.

datmixdxchick, what you describe as "my truth" is that Scientology is a bait-and-switch scheme that breaks up families, controls its members, and harass its critics, and is rampant of abuses. If it turns out that "my truth" is false, it would suggest a large group of people in all corners of the world are all lying about Scientology's abuses. How can a lie be conjured up from unrelated people around the world? Why are people around the world claiming the same abuses?

You're young. Don't let your life get ruined by Scientology. Tory Christman was an ex-Scientologist of 30 years, and it was only until she reached close to the top (OT VII) that she realized it was a slow train of mind control, to the point that she has begun speaking out against the Church of Scientology's abuses (forced abortions, breakup of families, harassment of critics, government infiltration, blackmail using confessional folders). Please look at the other side.

It is comical but in a way its also a fact...You cant necessarily learn good acting. It should just flow naturally through you, pretending to be someone else. A simple and sweet explanation :)
