Tamarind is imli in it's pure form. The chutney has other things added to it. You can find it at any Indian or Asian grocery store. Otherwise, you can sub lemon/lime juice.

You can skip the urad daal and the asafoetida...there are no real substitutes. Tamarind paste is sour so you can use lemon/lime juice. If you can get your hands on red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and turmeric, you can try those instead of the sambhar powder. Good luck!
